Some roads lead to the next town over. Others look like they lead somewhere else entirely!
In Northern Ireland, a quiet country lane is lined with twisting beech trees whose branches knot together overhead, forming a tunnel so strange it feels like a gateway to another realm! They're called the Dark Hedges, and they've been stopping travelers in their tracks for centuries.
Planted to Impress
The Dark Hedges weren't an accident of nature. The beech trees were planted almost 250 years ago with one goal in mind: to wow visitors on their way in.
Mission accomplished, and then some. Today, the eerie avenue is one of the most photographed places in the entire country.
A Road Fit for Royalty (and Dragons)
If the Dark Hedges look familiar, there's a good reason. The tree-lined road earned a starring role in Game of Thrones, drawing fans from around the world eager to walk the same path as their favorite characters.
Up close, it's easy to see why the Dark Hedges inspire so much imagination. The trees bend, twist, and stretch across the road as if they're reaching for one another or for anyone brave enough to pass beneath them.
From Dreamy to Downright Eerie
The Dark Hedges change personality with the time of day. Stroll through at sunrise, and golden light filters through the branches, making the whole tunnel glow like something out of a dream. But as the sun sets, shadows creep in and the atmosphere turns moody and mysterious. Just in time for spooky season!
Whether you visit at dawn or dusk, the Dark Hedges prove that some of the world's most otherworldly places are hiding in plain sight!
